So every farm needs a working dog, one that can herd and
follow commands. Well everything that is,
is what Curly is not. Although he is a
border collie, he thinks herding is kind of silly; except when the boys were
young and riding bicycles! And I was
trying to remember the last time he did something he was told, still thinking
on that. But some of his other skills
blend nicely with our farm. He is a
great watch dog, although not as vocal as the guinea hens. In addition to that he is just about the
friendliest dog you ever want to meet.
We just got back from the great outdoors where my wife removed about 10
pounds of fur from his thick coat. There
is something to be said for a dog who is just a great companion. I am sure that dogs do go to heaven because
they are the only animal that truly understands unconditional love, and
companionship. I think the Sermon on the
Mount, one of the greatest pieces of literature out there, could have been
summarized as, “see your dog, treat people like he treats you.” I do not know if Jesus had a dog, but over
the years he has given us some great ones, and Curly is certainly one of the
greats.
