Rows or beds?

I saw on one of the comments about being paid to weed a row.  Wow that brings back memories, I can’t remember actually being paid.  Of course no amount would be sufficient for duties preformed. I mean I may not have accepted it just because of the intensity of the task.  The rows in the garden my mother kept were approximately a mile long. They are much shorter now.   And if we got lucky we would get picked to do something somewhat edible like peas.  Hard to jam a squash in your mouth while you are weeding.  So this brings me back to mother and her wisdom, which should never be doubted.  We did a lot of research and found out the bedding your plants works better and involves less weeding.  So we have tried it in several areas and typed of plants. The more we tried to bed things the less we got out of the garden.  The garden became somewhat hard to navigate in certain areas and was not giving us much yield.   There was a reason mother planted in rows.  For most crops it just works better.  Yes there is more weeding involved but let it not be said we shied away from good honest hard work.  And you will find you can fit more in because it will be more organized.   I know all the diagrams say you fit more in with beds but that has not been our experience.  There are a few things we still bed that just go naturally in a bed.  Leafy greens are the main thing we bed now.
