Hi, this is the wife again. I just want to fill you in on my
background in gardening. Growing up, my parents always had a garden and
everyone helped. I remember weeding at a young age to do my part. My father
actually put in a second garden for the potatoes and some of the vine plants.
My parents started many of their own plants in the spring. My father had a
setup in the basement with grow lights and plastic. When the plants were
starting, the plastic was kept down and as they grew stronger the plastic could
be removed. There was also a fan set up after the plants were a little bigger.
The fan would gently blow across the plants to strengthen the plants. After the
plants were big enough they were moved to the cold frame at the edge of the
garden. This had a glass top and could be opened on warmer days and closed at
night.
Everything in gardening has a time and after so many years
it was almost a science with my parents. Planting, weeding, fertilizing,
suckering, replanting, and harvesting. There is so much knowledge
involved. I almost wish they had of
written everything down in a do-it-yourself book so I could remember
everything. I will continue to share my
background over time; there’s just too much for one post.
I remember being paid 5 cents a row for weeding when I was a kid and that seemed like a fortune back then. I wish I had their knowledge of gardening too. Mom and Dad sure had green thumbs!
